The Best of Times, The Worst of Times? Solstice Reflection

The Best of Times, The Worst of Times? Solstice Reflection

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us…..”
~ Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

I was looking at an article showing before and after pics of global warming effects, and then looked at NASA’s Images of Change site showing similar evidence in a more high-tech way. Along with what continues to go on, and what I know about our environmental crises, it is overwhelming. I went outside today to honor the Solstice with some gardening. Last night, Solstice eve, honored us with a yard filled to the brim with fireflies, which I posted a short video of on Instagram. That is an epitome of the kind of natural beauty and wonder we hold in our hearts as children (if we are allowed to), a field lit up with fireflies!

It is hard to imagine why we face the kind of willful ignorance that is going on about global warming, the effects of consumerism and single-use products and plastics pollution, deforestation, rainforest destruction, willful reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear power etc, and how the willful ignorance goes hand in hand with slashing of protections of water, air, habitats, species, etc., insane violence of all kinds, amoral leaders with amoral goals, insane objectifying policies…..

It is overwhelming that we face this AND we face also political parties of people bent on amoral actions and racism/xenophobia/misogyny – you name it – actually being called “values”, that is at a dangerous and fever pitch (here in the U.S. and other places in the world)…..or those who are for “business as usual” which is, at this point in time, also a path of ongoing crisis, destruction, war.

The Earth, health, the future of living beings/life of the planet cannot tolerate business as usual or worse from humans anymore.

I do believe things can and will change for the better! This too shall pass is a phrase for all things, not just some. I think that as long as we have life, heart, spirit and soul in us, it is our call to live fully with love, compassion, wisdom, critical thinking, creativity, our own unique being, and a responsiveness to the needs before us that we are most equipped to answer. There are so many miraculous and beautiful potentials before us too. And new hopes, actions, creations –  new ideas. The world/Earth/Universe is never just one thing!

We simply cannot close our eyes to the realities before us, of destructive and violent extremes – and of deep sanity and hopeful beauty in action too.

There are choices to be made. And they are made in every moment in —  how you think, what you choose to do, what you choose to feed, what you focus on and what you ignore, how you live, how you speak and so on.

Business as usual is not at all the need at this time, unless you are living and acting already in deeply real and effective counter-cultural ways…..counter-cultural to consumerism, to cronyism, to institutional/militaristic/factory models, to norms that constrict, demean, destroy spirit, life, wisdom, peace, originality.

These are the times we exist in.

And, life is a gift. It is sacred. It always will be.  We are here to amp up the gift, give thanks for that gift, and live and act like we do – no matter what! As long as we have breath….we keep on trying, being, doing as beings/souls for peace, wisdom, creativity, kindness, health, wholeness, equity, and compassionate restorative justice for all life.

As long as we have the gift of life in us, never give up. Keep doing positive, healing, healthy, smart, compassionate actions. Keep being, being you – true you. And make sure it IS you and not someone else’s expectations, junk, charged emotions, etc.

Keep seeing the best possible outcomes, and choices. See it, because visualization feeds the reality and makes it stronger and more real. The effectiveness of visualizing goals/actions is proven.

Also, look at reality, and realities. Dream. Feed and nourish them. Take them seriously. Ground your dreams in real life actions that connect to and feed those positive, wise, and healthy dreams.

Use your unique gifts and perspective and do something new, to make change, to help, to improve, to shut down hate….anything you can do. And speak up for all that is in critical need, in the best ways that you can.
